July 5 - 9, 2006

What is World Saxophone Congress?

The World Saxophone Congress is a festival gathering approximately 1000 saxophonists and other musicians from all over the world. It is held once every three years at a different congress centre in a different country. The Congress presents an opportunity to meet saxophonists from many countries and to listen to various concerts and performances of saxophone soloists, chamber ensembles, big bands and symphony orchestras that run simultaneously throughout the day in different halls of the congress centre. Each of the five days is concluded by an evening concert of the orchestra and outstanding international soloists.

The Congress is also convened with the purpose of presenting the advancements of music production and distribution as well as innovations in instrument-making and equipment. The concerts will be therefore accompanied by myriad other events running uninterruptedly on the premises of Cankarjev dom: conferences, lectures, clinics, discussion panels, master-classes and exhibitions of instrument makers, additional equipment, discography, sheet-music publications etc.

The World Saxophone Congress boasts a tradition of four decades and has been organised on different continents, the last two in Montreal (2000) and Minneapolis (2003), while most recently in Europe in Valencia (1996).

Who can participate (perform) at the World Saxophone Congress?

There are no limitations for participation. Traditionally there is very high interest for participation among saxophone players (professionals, professors, amateurs, students, quartets, ensembles...) and others involved in saxophone music (composers, conductors...)

Each active participant may perform at the Congress up to 25 minutes either as a soloist or in any type of group (it should consist a saxophone) interpreting classical, jazz, contemporary or any other saxophone literature. All styles are welcome at 14th World Saxophone Congress.

Passive participants may not perform, but they may listen to all performances and evening concerts.

Venue

The Congress will be held at Cankarjev dom, Cultural and Congress Centre located in the very centre of Ljubljana opposite the Slovenian Parliament and within walking distance of major hotels, shops, restaurants, and main sights of the city.
